MARKET UPDATE - WHY THIS CONFERENCE IS SO CRITICAL

The U.S. is the largest producer of nuclear power, accounting for 30% of worldwide generation.  It is predicted that 4 – 6 new units will come online in the U.S. by 2020, the first if those resulting from 16 license applications made since mid-2007 to build a total of 24 new nuclear reactors.

Nuclear is going to be an important power generation fuel for the future, it is a low carbon energy source and we believe diversification of energy sources is important.

In the U.S. there is a pipeline of 17 large units, 7 SMR’s and  11 additional COL applications are expected by the NRC - which Nuclear Energy Insider have estimated could result in an estimated market worth of over $100bn of planned new construction.
  • 4-6 of these new units will come on line by 2020 at a cost of $20bn +

As well as new commercial power plant projects – there are also a number of additional multi-billion dollar nuclear construction projects underway in the U.S. - totalling an estimated $26.85bn worth of nuclear construction activity. These include:

  • The Hanford Waste Treatment Plant which has an estimated budget of $12.2bn
  • URENCO’s National Enrichment Facility which has an estimated budget of $3bn
  • The MOX Facility at the Savannah River Site which has an estimated budget of $4.8bn
  • NNSA Y12 Uranium Processing Facility which has a top end estimated budget of $6.5bn
  • The USEC American Centrifuge Plant which has an estimated budget of $350m

What this means for nuclear service providers and manufactures is that there is a project pipeline in the U.S. of an estimated $126.85bn worth of new construction.
